ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Communication Communicate in Languages Other Than English 1.1: Students engage in conversation, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. Students will do this through the discussion forum as their final activity. 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. Students will do this by reading the biographies of the different music artists, as well as reading the lyrics to the different songs. Cultures Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied. Students will do this by watching the music videos and by reading the lyrics to the songs. 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied. Students will do this by summarizing the lyrics back to the instructor, and by participating in the discussion forum. Connections Connect with Other Disciplines and Acquire Information 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language. Students are being connected to social studies (study of culture and values), music, and through understanding poetry since poetry is the foundation for Arabic music. 3.2 Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures. Students will have to interpret and understand poetry since poetry is the foundation for Arabic music. Comparisons Develop Insight Into the Nature of Language and Cultures 4.1: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own. Students will do this through the discussion forum as their final activity. |
